1.Self-crosslinking latex polymers / emulsion coatings (main use)
This is Diacetone Acrylamide’s dominant industrial application:
>DAAM is copolymerized into acrylic or vinyl-acrylic emulsion polymers (latexes) used in paints, Beschichtungen, adhesives, and textile treatments.
>The ketone group on the DAAM units doesn’t react during the initial polymerization — instead, it’s designed to react later, after the coating/film is applied, with a co-formulated crosslinker (typically a dihydrazide compound, such as adipic acid dihydrazide) through a ketone-hydrazide condensation reaction.
>This creates a room-temperature, ambient self-crosslinking system: the polymer stays as a stable, uncrosslinked liquid latex in the can, but once applied as a film and as water evaporates, the ketone and hydrazide groups react to form crosslinks, dramatically improving the film’s water resistance, chemical resistance, hardness, and durability,without needing external heat curing.
2.Architectural and industrial coatings/paints
Widely used in exterior latex paints, where the self-crosslinking mechanism improves weatherability, block resistance (preventing painted surfaces from sticking together), scrub resistance, and overall film durability compared to non-crosslinked latex paints.
3.Adhesives
Used in pressure-sensitive and other latex-based adhesive formulations to improve cohesive strength, water resistance,and heat resistance of the cured adhesive film.
4.Textile and nonwoven treatments
