Erucamide is a fatty acid amide derived from erucic acid, with the molecular formula C₂₂H₄₃NO. It has a long hydrocarbon chain (22 carbons) with a cis double bond at the 13-position and a terminal amide group (–CONH₂).
This combination of a long nonpolar tail and a polar amide head group gives it distinctive surface-active properties.
Key mechanism: Erucamide’s effectiveness comes from its blooming/migration behavior —it’s initially compatible with the polymer melt but has limited solubility in the solid polymer,causing it to slowly migrate to the surface over time (days after film production) where it forms a thin, waxy, lubricating layer.This “bloom” process is why timing (post-extrusion) matters for its effectiveness.

Application of Erucamide:
1.Slip agent in plastics (main use)
Erucamide is widely used as a slip additive in polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) film production — particularly in packaging films, bags, and sheeting.
During processing,it migrates to the surface of the plastic film and forms a thin lubricating layer, reducing the coefficient of friction (COF) between film layers or between the film and processing equipment.
This prevents films from sticking together (blocking), improves machinability on packaging lines, and gives finished films a smoother feel and better handling on high-speed equipment (e.g., bag-making machines, printing presses).
2.Anti-blocking agent,Closely related to its slip function
It helps prevent plastic sheets or films from adhering to one another during storage and processing (rolls of film, stacked bags, etc.).
3.Mold release agent
In some plastic molding processes,it can help parts release more easily from molds due to its surface migration/lubricating behavior.
4.Antistatic contribution
While not a primary antistatic agent, its surface migration can offer minor antistatic benefits in some formulations.
5.Rubber and other polymer processing
Occasionally used in rubber compounding for similar lubricating/anti-tack purposes.
