Hydroxyl terminated silicone oil is a type of linear polydimethylsiloxane whose molecular chain ends are capped with reactive hydroxyl groups (‑OH).
Its general chemical structure: HO‑Si(CH₃)₂‑O‑[‑Si(CH₃)₂‑O‑]ₙ‑Si(CH₃)₂‑OH.
Unlike inert methyl‑terminated silicone oil, it carries reactive hydroxyl end‑groups and can participate in cross‑linking, condensation and grafting reactions.
OH Polymer’s main functions & applications:
1. Cross‑linking raw‑material for silicone elastomers / sealants
It is the core base polymer to produce room‑temperature‑vulcanized (RTV‑1 / RTV‑2) silicone rubber, silicone sealants, potting adhesives and silicone coatings. It reacts with cross‑linkers under moisture or catalyst to form high‑elasticity cured silicone networks.
2. Modifier for polymers, resins and coatings
Used as a reactive soft‑segment modifier for polyurethane, epoxy resin, acrylic coatings. It introduces silicone segments to improve weather resistance, low‑temperature flexibility, water‑repellency and anti‑scratch performance of finished materials.
3. Fiber & textile finishing agent
Applied in textile softener formulations. It provides fabrics with smooth, soft‑hand‑feel, wrinkle‑resistant and water‑repellent properties. Its reactive hydroxyl groups can bond onto fiber surfaces for better wash‑fastness than non‑reactive silicone oil.
4. Release agent, lubricant and surface‑tension regulator
Offers excellent lubricity, high‑temperature resistance, demolding property and surface smoothing effect in plastic, rubber and metal‑processing industries.
5. Intermediate for synthesizing other functional silicones
The terminal‑OH groups can react with isocyanates, silanes and carboxylic acids to synthesize amino‑modified silicone, polyether‑modified silicone and other derivative silicone products.
Hydroxy silicone oil’s key characteristics:
– Reactive (‑OH) end groups
– Good thermal stability, low‑temperature resistance
– Hydrophobic, low surface tension
– Excellent flexibility after cross‑linking
