Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) is a stable derivative of ascorbic acid,with the molecular formula C₈H₁₂O₆. It retains the core ascorbic acid (lactone ring) structure,with an ethyl ether group (–OC₂H₅) replacing one of the hydroxyl groups at the 3-position.This modification protects the molecule from the rapid oxidation that plagues standard L-ascorbic acid.
Its key advantage over plain Vitamin C,pure L-ascorbic acid is notoriously unstable as it oxidizes and degrades quickly when exposed to light,air,and water,losing efficacy and often turning a formulation yellow/brown over time. Ethyl ascorbic acid is far more stable in aqueous formulations while still functioning as a source of active vitamin C once it penetrates the skin (it’s converted to free ascorbic acid within the skin after absorption).
